Welcome to the Municipal Treasurers Association of Wisconsin's web page. Here you will find a variety of helpful information and links to answer any questions you may have regarding the MTAW.

President's Message

Happy change of Wisconsin weather! I think we went from winter to spring, back to winter and now directly to summer – but time will tell. I’m feeling privileged and honored to be serving as President of our association. I know that the year will bring as much new knowledge as anything else and I’m looking forward to it.

An association is only as good as its members make it and ours is one to be proud of. The attendance and participation shown at our conferences along with the networking that goes on show that we are a united group; we care about our profession, our communities and each other and are willing to work to prove it. Give yourself a pat on the back and keep up the good work.

I remember when I was a new treasurer (quite a long time ago), wondering just how big a challenge I’d accepted – where would I get answers to my questions and what if there were laws I wasn’t aware of and so on. Joining the Municipal Treasurer’s Association of Wisconsin was an especially big help to me at that time and it’s only gotten better. I realized that I was not alone and there was help available. When my position changed from part-time to full-time, I got to attend the UW Green Bay Municipal Treasurers Institute and gained more confidence in managing my work. The next best thing to knowing an answer is knowing where to find it and that’s one of the benefits my membership in MTAW and attendance at the Institute have given me.

The next institute is coming up fast – it’s the week of July 11, 2010. If this is something you haven’t experienced I encourage you to check it out and try to attend. I will be attending this year to promote our association and am looking forward to meeting many new treasurers. Getting training money may be a struggle, but training is an investment with a payback that every municipality deserves. Scholarships have already been awarded for this year but there are a number available and the application process is not difficult – it’s worth checking into. Contact information for the institute is available on our website.

Our district directors have obviously been busy – I’ve seen a number of great agendas for upcoming meetings. Please try to attend. These meetings are usually not too far to travel, less than a day’s time commitment and inexpensive. In return, you get information on a timely subject and a chance to network with others in your district – well worth attending.

Here’s to a great year ahead with your help and participation. I’ll do whatever I can to help our members, but no – I don’t have funds to make budgeting easier. There’s no magic – only hard work and hard decisions. We have Act 28, the Maintenance of Effort of EMS, Police and Fire just to add more challenge. I see war stories in our future. Good luck and hope to see you soon.

Nancy Solberg
President
Municipal Treasurers Association of Wisconsin

Joseph J Krueger Award

Joseph J Krueger was the second President of our Association – he served from 1973-1974 – He was active in getting our Association off the ground. Krueger’s career was in public service most notably as  the Treasurer of the City of Milwaukee – he  founded the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame and ran it as a labor of love for decades – he convinced the State Senate to charter the Hall of Fame in 1951, making Wisconsin the first state to have its own hall of fame.

The Association established this award in his honor to recognize a Treasurer that is not only active in our Association but also active in their Community.  This year's honoree is Jon Pfeilsticker - Finance Director of the City of Altoona.
