Greetings from the MTAW President, Barb Guckenberger
Happy tax season everyone! By now your 2019 property tax bills are mailed and collections are heavily underway. It is certainly not a one size fits all process: some Counties collect all property tax for their local municipalities and many of you will turn the balance over to the County to collect after January 31st; here in Milwaukee County, not so much; we collect taxes through July 31st. Regardless of your process, December and January are quite the busy months!!!
Are you a newer Treasurer who has been struggling through tax season and could use some help through the process? MTAW members can request a mentor who will be matched up with someone with experience in a similar municipality. Or if you are a more seasoned Treasurer, please consider becoming a mentor and earn some points toward certification. Applications for both can be found on the MTAW website.
Not a member of MTAW? There are many member benefits such as cost savings for conferences, scholarship opportunities, mentoring, certification and access to the members only section of the MTAW website. To learn more about MTAW benefits, committees, conferences and more, please visit the MTAW website at mtaw.org. Please note: MTAW Membership Year is May 1 – April 30; all new members receive a reduced membership price. Memberships must be renewed effective May 1, regardless of when you become a member.
MTAW Spring 2020 Conference will be held at the Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake on April 30-May 1, 2020. Come join us as we “Go for Gold!” That’s right, the conference committee has “relayed” the information to me that they really “wrestled” with “competing” ideas until finally The Olympics “won” out. The topics will have you “tumbling” over each other while “racing” to your seats, not to mention the fun events they have planned “Tokyo” (to go – sorry) with this theme. And don’t forget about the New Treasurers Workshop the day before the conference (April 29th). Watch for the agenda and registration information in the near future!
Are you looking to achieve or retain your CMTW? You can earn experience points toward certification/ re-certification by volunteering for a committee, chairing a committee, becoming a mentor, District Director or a Board member. To find out more about the qualifications, requirements and duties involved check out the MTAW Officers and Committees Manual on our website. If interested in adding your name to the list for open positions during the 2020-2021 term, please contact President-Elect Deb Winter at dwinter@village.cottage-grove.wi.us.
We currently have an open position for the Legislative Committee/DOR Advisory Committee. If you are from a City and are interested in helping out they have a couple of projects to work on so please contact me ASAP at bguckenberger@oakcreekwi.org.
Have a great winter and I look forward to seeing you in the spring!
